Bulgaria marks Unification Day on September 6
On September 6, Bulgaria celebrates one of the most important holidays in its history – Unification Day. On this day in 1885, the historic unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia took place. This event was a key moment for Bulgarian statehood and demonstrated the people's aspiration for unity and independence.
The Unification was an act prepared by the Bulgarian Secret Central Revolutionary Committee. Following a successful uprising in Plovdiv, the Bulgarian lands were united under the rule of Prince Alexander I of Battenberg. This process occurred without foreign interference, which was a great success for the young Bulgarian diplomacy and army at the time.
Today, the holiday is celebrated with official ceremonies throughout the country. The largest events are traditionally held in the city of Plovdiv, where the Unification Monument is located. In the capital, Sofia, and other major cities, solemn commemorations and wreath-laying ceremonies are also organized at the monuments of the heroes who participated in these events.
Unification Day is an official non-working day for all Bulgarians. It is a time to pay tribute to the ancestors who believed in the power of a united nation. The holiday reminds us that when Bulgarians are united, they can achieve great goals and defend their national interests.
