Tension in relations between Sofia and Skopje: Hristijan Mickoski refuses dialogue with the Bulgarian president
Relations between Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia are once again the focus of attention following recent statements by the Prime Minister of our southwestern neighbor, Hristijan Mickoski. In a public statement, he confirmed that he is currently not maintaining any communication with Bulgarian head of state Rumen Radev.
This decision by the Macedonian Prime Minister comes at a key moment, immediately preceding an upcoming visit to the region by the President of the European Commission. Mickoski emphasized that his primary focus is directed toward his country's European integration, while simultaneously avoiding direct political dialogue with Bulgarian authorities.
The issue of bilateral relations remains complex, especially in the context of Skopje's European path. Bulgaria has long insisted on the fulfillment of commitments related to the rights of Bulgarians in North Macedonia and historical issues, which are part of the negotiating framework with the European Union.
The lack of communication at the highest level between Sofia and Skopje is raising concerns among European partners regarding the possibility of a swift resolution to the disputes. Diplomatic circles are closely monitoring whether this position of the Macedonian government will change following talks with representatives from Brussels.
At the moment, the situation remains unchanged, and the future of the dialogue between the two neighboring countries depends on the willingness of the parties to find common ground. The topic is expected to be a leading one in the coming weeks as ways to overcome the political isolation are sought.
