Bulgaria to modernize its navy with new minesweepers
The Parliamentary Committee on Defense approved at first reading a project for the purchase of seven minesweepers. The decision was made with a large majority, with 16 deputies voting "for" and only one voting against the proposal.
The ships will be supplied by the Netherlands and Belgium. This purchase is part of the country's long-term plan for the modernization of the Bulgarian Naval Forces. The goal is to improve security in the Black Sea and fulfill Bulgaria's allied commitments to NATO.
Minesweepers are specialized vessels used to detect and destroy sea mines. Having such equipment is of utmost importance for ensuring safe navigation in the region, especially under conditions of increased tension.
The project for the ratification of the contract is yet to be reviewed and voted on finally in the plenary hall of the parliament. If adopted, this will be an important step towards renewing the outdated equipment of the Bulgarian army.
