Total Solar Eclipse on August 12: What We Will See from Bulgaria
On August 12, 2026, the sky over Europe will offer one of the most impressive astronomical events – a total solar eclipse. This phenomenon occurs when the Moon positions itself exactly between the Earth and the Sun, briefly hiding the solar disk completely and plunging the day into darkness.
The path of totality will pass through parts of the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, and Spain. In these regions, observers will be able to see the Sun's corona and feel the unusual drop in temperatures that accompanies a total eclipse.
Residents of Bulgaria, however, will not see the total obscuration of the Sun. From the territory of our country, the phenomenon will be visible only as a partial eclipse. This means that the Moon will cover only a small part of the solar disk, which will make the event less dramatic compared to locations situated within the path of totality.
Astronomers remind us that even during a partial eclipse, it is extremely important to use special protective glasses. Looking directly at the Sun without protective equipment can cause serious and permanent damage to vision. Regular sunglasses are not sufficient for safe protection.
In conclusion, although Bulgaria does not fall within the zone of the total eclipse, the event remains an interesting opportunity for astronomy enthusiasts to observe the movement of celestial bodies. Preparation for the observation should begin now to ensure safety and proper equipment for all enthusiasts.
