Energy Reforms: “Mini Maritsa-iztok” and TPP “Maritsa Iztok 2” to Separate from BEH

Bulgaria is beginning important reforms in the energy sector that will change the structure of state-owned companies. These changes are directly linked to the country's commitments under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP). The main news is that two of the largest energy enterprises – “Mini Maritsa-iztok” and TPP “Maritsa Iztok 2” – will be removed from the structure of the Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH).

The reform is planned to be implemented in 2025. It is a mandatory condition for Bulgaria to receive the next payments from European funds under the RRP. The main goal of this decision is to ensure greater transparency in energy management and to promote competition in the free market.

“Mini Maritsa-iztok” and TPP “Maritsa Iztok 2” are of strategic importance for the country's energy security. Until now, they operated under the umbrella of BEH, which consolidates almost all state assets in the sector. Following their separation, the companies are expected to have greater financial and operational independence, which is a requirement of European regulators.

The restructuring process will be closely monitored by trade unions and industry experts. This is an important step towards the modernization of the Bulgarian energy system in the context of the transition to cleaner energy. The government continues its work on fulfilling the European Commission's requirements to ensure the stability of the economy.
