Bulgaria loses nearly half of its drinking water due to old pipes

Europe is facing a serious water supply problem, as a large portion of treated water is lost before it reaches people's homes. According to recent data, an average of 23 percent of water in European countries leaks into the soil due to aging infrastructure and accidents in the water transmission network.

The situation in Bulgaria is significantly more alarming compared to the average levels for the continent. Our country loses nearly 45 percent of its drinking water, which means that almost every second liter of treated water does not reach the end consumers. These losses are mainly due to the poor condition of the pipes, which in many places were laid decades ago.

Aging infrastructure not only leads to a shortage of resources but also creates serious economic and environmental challenges. Maintaining the network requires huge investments, and frequent accidents disrupt the daily lives of thousands of Bulgarians who are regularly left without water due to repairs.

Experts emphasize that addressing this problem requires a complete modernization of the water supply systems in the country. Without long-term investments in new materials and technologies, water losses will continue to be high, which puts the stability of the water supply at risk in the future.
