Ivaylo Mirchev: The lessons of the Unification are important for Bulgaria's current policy
On September 6, Bulgaria marked 139 years since the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia. On the occasion of the holiday, politician Ivaylo Mirchev sent a message to society, emphasizing that the historical events of 1885 remain a key lesson for modern Bulgarian statesmen.
In his statement, Mirchev declared that the country's national interest cannot be protected through passivity or "lying low." According to him, the Unification is proof that when Bulgarians are united and act decisively, they can achieve important goals, despite the pressure from the great world powers at that time.
The politician also criticized the way the country's foreign policy is conducted today, especially in relation to Russia. He believes that Bulgaria should take a more categorical position that corresponds to its Euro-Atlantic priorities and not be afraid of external pressure, just as our ancestors did more than a century ago.
According to Mirchev, today's politicians should draw inspiration from the courage of the participants in the Unification. He called for more decisiveness in the governance of the state so that Bulgaria can be an equal and respected partner in the European Union and NATO.
The celebrations of the holiday took place with official ceremonies throughout the country, with the focus being on the importance of national unity. Mirchev's words remind citizens that history is not just about the past, but is a guide for how important decisions should be made for the future of Bulgaria.
