Bulgaria closes the last specialized institutions for children

Bulgaria is marking significant progress in the care of children at risk. In recent years, the country has managed to close almost all the specialized institutions that existed in the past. Out of a total of 137 homes that were operating some time ago, only two remain today.

The deinstitutionalization process is an important part of the state's social policy. The goal of this reform is for children not to grow up in large homes, but to be raised in an environment closer to a family setting. This helps the little ones receive better individual care and attention.

The last two medical-social care homes that are still operating are set to be closed in the near future. After their transformation, the child placement system in Bulgaria will be completely changed. Instead of large institutions, children will be directed to family-type centers or foster families.

Experts emphasize that this change is key to the children's development. The transition to smaller communities allows for easier socialization and better opportunities for future development. The state continues to work on securing the necessary resources for the successful completion of this process.
