Activists place "TOXIC" sign in front of Bobov Dol TPP
On Wednesday, the environmental organization Greenpeace Bulgaria held a protest action in front of the Bobov Dol Thermal Power Plant. Activists placed a huge sign with the word "TOXIC" near the plant's chimneys. The goal of the demonstration is to draw public attention to the pollution of the air and the environment in the region.
The protest comes at a time when the power plant is once again announcing its plans for modernization. The management of Bobov Dol TPP claims that it is working on transitioning to the use of natural gas and other alternative fuels. According to the company, these changes should reduce harmful emissions and make energy production cleaner.
However, Greenpeace expresses serious doubts regarding these promises. Environmentalists believe that the transition to gas is not enough to protect nature and human health. They are demanding a faster shutdown of coal-fired capacities and a transition to entirely renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.
The topic of the future of coal-fired power plants in Bulgaria remains current and controversial. While energy companies are looking for ways to maintain their operations through new technologies, environmental organizations continue to insist on stricter control and a greener energy policy in the country.
