Bulgaria honors the memory of heroes who died in the line of duty
On August 15, Bulgaria marks Rescue Day. On this date, our country pays well-deserved tribute to the doctors, police officers, firefighters, and volunteers who lost their lives while helping others in critical situations.
The tradition dates back to 2005, when the memory of Dr. Stefan Cherkezov was honored. He was a doctor who, in 1963, managed to save 47 people from a burning bus, but he himself died from his severe burns. His feat became a symbol of self-sacrifice and professionalism in the name of human life.
Commemorative ceremonies are held in cities across the country in front of hospitals and monuments. Representatives of state institutions, medical teams, and citizens lay flowers and wreaths to express their gratitude to those who put the safety of society before their own lives.
This day is an important reminder of the risk that frontline workers take every day. Our society unites to show that their deeds will not be forgotten and that their courage serves as an example for future generations.
