The remains of Tsar Samuel to return to Bulgaria in 2026
Bulgarian Vice President Iliana Iotova welcomed the agreement reached between Bulgaria and Greece for the return of the remains attributed to the medieval Bulgarian ruler Tsar Samuel. The historic event is expected to take place in 2026.
For decades, the ruler's remains were kept in Greece. Negotiations between the two countries were long and complex, but ultimately led to a positive outcome. The return of the relics is seen as an important step for Bulgarian history and national pride.
Tsar Samuel is one of the most significant figures in Bulgarian medieval history. He ruled the First Bulgarian Empire at the end of the 10th and the beginning of the 11th century. His reign was marked by constant wars and attempts to preserve the independence of the state.
The return of the remains to the homeland will allow them to be laid to rest in a suitable tomb, where Bulgarian citizens will be able to pay tribute to the ruler. Institutions in Bulgaria are expected to begin preparations for the solemn welcoming of the relics in two years' time.
