The President handed over the first mandate to form a government
On May 7, the presidential institution took an important step toward resolving the political situation in the country. Vice President Iliana Iotova officially handed the first exploratory mandate to form a new cabinet to the largest political force in parliament – the coalition "We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria."
The handing over of the mandate is a key moment according to the Bulgarian Constitution. Once the mandate has been handed over, the coalition's representatives have a seven-day period in which they must present the structure and composition of the Council of Ministers. If they succeed in gathering the necessary support in the National Assembly, the country will have a regular government.
In the event that the first attempt proves unsuccessful, the procedure provides for the handing over of a second mandate to the second-largest parliamentary group. If an agreement is not reached even then, the president must hand over a third mandate to a political force of his choosing.
The current political situation is the subject of great attention from Bulgarian citizens. Everyone is waiting to see if political leaders will manage to find common ground and offer a working solution for the governance of the state.
Intensive negotiations between the political parties are expected in the coming days. The results of these talks will show whether Bulgaria will have a new government or if the country will head toward yet another round of early parliamentary elections.
