Important for tourists: Medical services at the seaside are often not covered by the National Health Insurance Fund
The summer season is in full swing and thousands of Bulgarians are choosing the local Black Sea coast for their vacation. However, experts remind that it is important for tourists to be prepared for unexpected health problems while they are away from home.
A study in the largest Bulgarian resort, Sunny Beach, shows a serious problem for vacationers. There are ten medical centers operating in the resort, but none of them have a contract with the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).
This means that if tourists seek emergency help at these centers, they will have to pay the full price of the examinations and procedures themselves. The health insurance contributions that citizens pay monthly do not cover expenses at private clinics by the sea.
Before leaving for vacation, specialists advise people to check where the nearest state hospitals or emergency centers that work with the NHIF are located. It is also a good idea to set aside additional funds for medical expenses in the vacation budget.
Being informed is key to a peaceful summer. Tourists should be careful and ensure they know what their rights and options for accessing healthcare are before they encounter a potential health problem.
