Bulgaria to modernize its navy with new minesweepers
The Parliamentary Defense Committee has officially approved the proposal to acquire seven minesweepers for the needs of the Bulgarian Navy. The ships will be purchased from the Netherlands and Belgium, with the goal of the deal being to increase security in the Black Sea.
The decision comes at a time when security in the region is of key importance due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The presence of sea mines in the Black Sea poses a serious risk to shipping and trade routes, which necessitates an urgent upgrade of the equipment available to the Bulgarian army.
According to experts, these vessels will allow the Bulgarian Navy to conduct mine clearance and surveillance operations more effectively. This will ensure greater safety for civilian ships passing through Bulgarian territorial waters.
The purchase project is yet to be voted on in the plenary hall of the National Assembly. It is expected that the deputies will support the modernization, as it is part of the long-term plans to strengthen the country's defense capabilities within NATO.
This step is an important part of the process of updating Bulgaria's outdated weaponry. With the acquisition of the new minesweepers, our country will be better prepared to respond to modern challenges and ensure the peace of mind of its citizens and partners.
