New data on air pollution from TPP Bobov Dol
Greenpeace Bulgaria has published new data showing serious air quality issues around the Bobov Dol Thermal Power Plant (TPP). According to the released information, the plant exceeded the permissible limits for harmful emissions several times within just the first three weeks of 2026.
Data indicates that over a 21-day period, five instances of sulfur dioxide (SO2) level exceedances were recorded. In addition, two instances of fine particulate matter (PM) exceedances were reported. These indicators are directly linked to the plant's operations and raise concerns for the health of people living in the area.
Greenpeace criticizes the management of TPP Bobov Dol and the trade unions, claiming that information regarding the plant's harmful impact is not being presented accurately to the public. According to the environmentalists, pollution from this source is among the most severe in the country.
At this time, official institutions have yet to issue a final statement on the case. The issue of environmental standards in the energy sector remains an important topic for Bulgaria, as the balance between electricity production and environmental protection is of key importance for the health of citizens.
