Bulgaria to veto EU sanctions against Russian Patriarch
Bulgaria has announced that it is prepared to veto new European sanctions against Russia if the Russian Patriarch Kirill is included in the list of restrictive measures. This decision was communicated by President Rumen Radev, who emphasized the country's position during international discussions.
According to the Bulgarian government, the inclusion of religious leaders in sanctions lists is a delicate matter. Authorities in Sofia express concerns that such actions could be perceived as interference in church affairs and lead to further tension in relations with Moscow.
The issue of sanctions against Russia is part of the European Union's general policy following the start of the military conflict in Ukraine. To date, the EU has adopted several packages of measures aimed at the Russian economy, the financial sector, and specific political figures.
Bulgaria, as a member of the European Union, participates actively in the discussions of these measures. Nevertheless, the country's position regarding the Russian Patriarch remains firm. Diplomatic efforts to find a solution continue as European leaders attempt to reach unanimity on the new proposals.
It is expected that the topic will be discussed again at the level of European institutions in the coming weeks. The Bulgarian side will continue to monitor the development of the situation closely in order to protect its national interests and views regarding international sanctions.
