Appellate Court in Plovdiv keeps woman in custody for NHIF fraud
The Appellate Court in Plovdiv has decided to keep in custody a woman accused of organizing a large-scale scheme to siphon funds from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). The case has sparked significant public interest due to the gravity of the charges related to financial abuse within the healthcare system.
According to investigative authorities, the woman organized a criminal scheme through which fictitious patient hospitalizations were reported. In this way, funds from the state budget intended for the actual treatment of sick people were siphoned off.
Magistrates determined that the evidence collected so far is sufficient to justify the assumption of her involvement in the criminal activity. The court also emphasized that there is a risk the accused could commit another crime if released.
This case is another example of the efforts of law enforcement authorities in Bulgaria to curb the abuse of public funds in the healthcare sector. The investigation into the case continues, and other details regarding the operation of the illegal scheme are expected to be revealed.
The decision of the Appellate Court in Plovdiv is final and not subject to appeal. The prosecution is expected to file an indictment in court once the collection of all necessary evidence in the pre-trial proceeding is completed.
