Because they threaten women: More than 13,000 men expelled again
The authorities in Austria have issued more than 13,000 restraining orders against men by early December to protect women and families from violence. Despite a slight decrease, the number of orders remains alarmingly high, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by domestic abusers.
The Federal Criminal Police (BKA) indicates that these measures not only maintain the safety of authorities but also help protect wives and thousands of children from fear and potential harm. Since 2020, restraining orders can include a no-contact range of up to 100 meters and an automatic ban on weapons.
Between 2023 and 2024, tens of thousands of eviction orders were issued, with a slight decrease from 15,115 to 14,583. Unfortunately, nearly 3,000 children under the age of 14 were affected by domestic violence related to these abusive men during the same period.
Since 2021, mandatory violence prevention sessions for potential offenders have been held, with 12,334 sessions conducted last year. Authorities emphasize that these programs, along with restraining orders, are essential to prevent further harm and domestic crimes.
BKA indicates a positive result: this year, no murders of women occurred under a restraining order or a valid no-contact order, demonstrating the effectiveness of these measures. However, 16 women have lost their lives at the hands of former or current partners by mid-December, highlighting the ongoing need for vigilance and immediate action from the police.
