The wave of store bankruptcies is rising across the country

Germany is witnessing a sharp rise in store bankruptcies, as new data shows that small shops are struggling to survive against major online platforms and large stores. A recent study indicates that the situation is approaching record levels.

According to research conducted by Allianz Trade, 2,490 bankruptcies were recorded in the retail sector between August 2024 and August 2025. This figure nearly matches the highest level in ten years, highlighting the depth of the crisis affecting small and medium-sized enterprises in the country.

The insurance company says that small stores are fighting a battle of 'David against Goliath' against massive online markets. The high investment costs in digital updates, automated systems, and modern logistics have pushed many of them to the brink of collapse, while consumers continue to shift towards online shopping.

A clear example of the decline of this sector is the closure of all Esprit branches in Germany, including the last store in Berlin. Photos taken by Anette Riedel documented the end of an important phase for this brand that was once popular.

Amid this decline, a glimmer of hope emerges for the hospitality sector, as the German parliament has approved a reduction in sales tax on restaurants, a step expected to alleviate financial pressure on them and help stabilize a sector still recovering from consecutive economic shocks.
