Canadian Senators' International Travel Costs Rise Significantly
A new report from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) reveals that international travel by members of the Senate has increased significantly over the past three years. According to the data, 65 senators spent over $1.8 million of taxpayer money on overseas trips between January 2023 and March 2026.
The report highlights that the number of international trips taken by senators has doubled during this period. As a result of this increase in travel, the total cost to Canadian taxpayers has jumped by 88 percent compared to previous spending levels.
These trips often involve senators traveling to various countries for meetings, conferences, or diplomatic missions. While such travel is sometimes part of their official duties, the sharp rise in expenses has drawn attention to how public funds are being managed within the upper chamber of Parliament.
The CTF, an organization that advocates for lower taxes and government accountability, released these figures to encourage more transparency regarding Senate spending. The group suggests that the public has a right to know how their tax dollars are being used for international travel.
As of now, the Senate has not provided a detailed response to the specific findings of the report. The data serves as a reminder of the ongoing discussions in Canada regarding government accountability and the responsible use of public resources.
