Canada Launches New Defence Drone Initiative to Boost Domestic Technology
The Government of Canada has officially introduced the Defence Drone Initiative (DDI), a new program designed to modernize the country’s military technology. This initiative focuses on acquiring advanced uncrewed and autonomous systems, commonly known as drones, to support national security and defence operations.
As part of this launch, the government has started its first prequalification round for potential suppliers. This process allows Canadian companies that specialize in drone technology to demonstrate their capabilities and meet the specific requirements set by the Department of National Defence. By opening this process, the government aims to identify reliable partners who can provide innovative solutions for future military needs.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen Canada’s domestic defence industry. By prioritizing local suppliers, the government hopes to foster growth in the Canadian technology sector while ensuring that the military has access to the latest autonomous equipment. This move is expected to reduce reliance on foreign technology and build a more self-sufficient defence supply chain.
Interested businesses are now invited to participate in the prequalification phase to become eligible for future government contracts. Officials state that this is a significant step toward integrating modern drone technology into Canada’s defence strategy. The program will continue to evolve as the government evaluates the proposals submitted by participating companies.
