Saab Offers Pilot Training in Canada for Gripen Fighter Jets
The Swedish aerospace company Saab has announced that it would move its pilot training program to Canada if the federal government chooses to purchase its Gripen fighter jets. This offer comes as Canada continues to modernize its national defence capabilities and replace its aging fleet of aircraft.
Currently, Canada has already signed a major agreement with the American company Lockheed Martin. In 2022, Ottawa committed to a $19-billion deal to acquire up to 88 F-35 fighter jets. This multi-billion dollar project is intended to be the primary solution for Canada's future air combat needs.
Despite the existing contract with Lockheed Martin, the debate over Canada's military procurement remains active. Saab’s proposal highlights the potential economic benefits of their offer, specifically the creation of local training facilities and jobs within the Canadian aerospace sector.
As the government moves forward with its current procurement plans, officials continue to monitor the progress of the F-35 delivery schedule. The decision to invest in these jets is a significant part of Canada’s long-term strategy to maintain security and meet its commitments to international partners.
