The University of Chile invites you to discover Arturo Prat's law thesis
Every May 21, Chile commemorates Navy Day to remember the historic Naval Battle of Iquique that took place in 1879. On this date, special tribute is paid to Arturo Prat, the greatest hero of the Chilean Navy. However, there is a part of his life that is less known by the general public: his distinguished career as a lawyer.
On the occasion of this celebration, the Andrés Bello Central Archive of the University of Chile has invited the community to discover a historical document of great value. It is the original thesis with which Arturo Prat obtained his professional law degree. This academic work allows us to see a different facet of the national hero, beyond his military uniform.
Arturo Prat graduated as a lawyer in 1876, only three years before his death in combat. His thesis, titled "Observations on the current electoral law," analyzed the voting system of that time. In the text, Prat proposed various reforms to improve transparency and fairness in the country's electoral processes.
For researchers at the University of Chile, this document is a treasure that demonstrates that Prat was an intellectual man deeply committed to the civil development of his nation. Despite his demanding responsibilities in the Navy, he managed to successfully complete his university studies at Chile's leading educational institution.
This initiative by the Central Archive seeks to bring history closer to citizens in a more human and complete way. By exploring his work as a lawyer, people can better understand the personality of a man who combined his bravery at sea with a solid academic background and a great sense of civic duty.
