Colombia to decide its presidency in a runoff election
Colombia is preparing for a new and important election day. Following the results of the first round, citizens must choose their next president on June 21. The candidates who will compete in this final stage are Iván Cepeda and Abelardo de la Espriella, who obtained the highest number of votes in the recent elections.
The decision to go to a second round was confirmed after processing 99.03% of the votes. According to electoral authorities, none of the candidates managed to obtain the absolute majority required to win in the first round. For this reason, Colombian law establishes that the two most-voted candidates must face each other again to decide who will lead the country.
The two candidates represent very different political visions. Iván Cepeda is the representative of the Pacto Histórico coalition, a group with progressive proposals. For his part, Abelardo de la Espriella leads the Defensores de la Patria party, a formation identified with right-wing ideas. This division shows a polarized political landscape in the South American nation.
During the coming weeks, both politicians will continue their campaigns to convince voters who have not yet decided their vote. The atmosphere in the country is one of great expectation, as the result of these elections will define Colombia's social and economic course for the coming years. The main topics of debate include security, the economy, and social reforms.
The final appointment at the polls will be on June 21. The international community is closely watching this process, which is fundamental for the democratic stability of the region. Colombians now have the responsibility to choose between two different models of government in a vote that promises to be historic.
