Alias Marlon Killed and Security Reinforced for Presidential Elections
Colombia is experiencing a day marked by high-impact military operations and security preparations for the upcoming elections. Authorities confirmed the death of a major leader of the FARC dissidents, while reports of armed pressure in key regions of the country emerge just hours before the polls.
The Military Forces killed Iván Jacobo Idrobo Arredondo, known as alias 'Marlon', leader of the 'Jaime Martínez' front of the FARC dissidents (groups that did not accept the peace agreement), in the department of Cauca. The governors of Valle and Cauca, along with the mayor of Cali, described the operation as one of the most significant blows against terrorism in the region. However, a security alert remains in the municipality of Jamundí, Valle, due to possible reprisals from this armed group.
Regarding electoral matters, the governor of Meta, Rafaela Cortés, reported an attempted kidnapping of the mayor of Mesetas and warned of pressure from armed groups against the civilian population before the voting. Within this framework of surveillance, U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno arrived in Bogotá to serve as an international observer for the election day, following the resolution of previous differences with the national government.
In the area of public safety and emergencies, a serious accident occurred in the Moravia sector of Medellín, where a dump truck apparently suffered a mechanical failure and collided with several vehicles and a house, leaving four people injured. In Cali, police captured an 18-year-old youth following a shootout; the detainee is a suspect in the murder of a woman. Additionally, heavy rains in the southern Valle de Aburrá caused trees to fall on the Caldas bypass, leading to road emergencies.
