Colombia: Current political, economic, and social news of the day
Colombia is preparing for a decisive presidential runoff between Abelardo de la Espriella and Iván Cepeda. Experts are analyzing how social media can influence voters and reduce abstention in this final stage. It is essential for the country to choose based on real democratic projects and not just emotional manipulation, seeking basic political guarantees for the nation's future.
In the economic sphere, the dollar in Colombia has shown a very significant downward trend. For the fourth consecutive day, the U.S. currency closed below 3,600 pesos, settling at exactly 3,565.18 pesos this Friday. This stability is key for the national market as investors digest current economic expectations.
Security in the city of Cúcuta is a central theme today following several successful police operations. Three young men were captured in the Barrio Nuevo sector with firearms, drugs, and cash. Additionally, authorities detained Lida Marcela Ortiz Cordero, who is identified as a key figure in a human trafficking network operating between the department of Norte de Santander and the city of Medellín.
On the other hand, tragic news has moved the residents of Villa del Rosario: the death of Tatiana Ferrer Sandoval due to a stray bullet. The young woman had the dream of traveling to Spain very soon, but her life was violently extinguished. In the education sector, a judicial action suspended the appointment of former rector Héctor Parra to the Superior Council of the Francisco de Paula Santander University (UFPS), which has generated strong tensions and internal controversies within the institution.
Regarding the management of public services, Hugo Vergel celebrated 20 years of leadership at the head of the company Aguas Kpital in Cúcuta. Vergel highlighted the importance of protecting accumulated technical knowledge to guarantee water supply. He recalled that, before his management, many families had to store water in buckets due to the lack of a constant and efficient service in the city.
Finally, in wellness and culture news, the importance of vacations as an opportunity to renew family life and recover physical and mental energy outside of the routine is highlighted. Additionally, in the world of entertainment, the Colombian-French presenter Violeta Bergonzi debuted in the fashion market with her collection ‘Violeta en su Salsa’, a tropical and feminine visual proposal that marks her success as an entrepreneur.
