Colombia prepares for elections on a day marked by judicial and social news
Colombia is preparing for the upcoming presidential elections with a significant security operation. The National Army will deploy 14,000 soldiers in the departments of Antioquia, Córdoba, and Chocó to protect polling stations. This surveillance will also extend to parts of the department of Sucre and the municipality of Puerto Boyacá, with the aim of ensuring that citizens can vote peacefully this Sunday.
In the political landscape, candidate Paloma Valencia, from the Democratic Center party, presented her main proposals in a recent interview. Valencia emphasized that her team offers experience and transparency to govern. Additionally, authorities reminded voters that participating in the May 31 elections brings practical benefits, such as discounts on official procedures and other incentives provided by the electoral certificate.
On the other hand, the healthcare system in the department of Sucre is facing a worrying crisis. Nearly 139,000 members of the Coosalud EPS are at risk of losing their medical care due to a debt of 40 billion pesos with hospitals and clinics. Faced with this situation, many patients have had to resort to legal measures to try to secure their treatments and basic health services.
In the judicial field, two important sentences were made public. In Colombia, a toxicologist doctor who worked with Diego Maradona was sentenced for the sexual abuse of a minor and still faces three other similar proceedings. Internationally, a court in Austria sentenced a man to 15 years in prison for planning a terrorist attack during a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna, after linking himself to an extremist group.
Colombian society is also shocked by tragedies affecting minors. In the municipality of El Espinal, Tolima, residents protested the death of Mía Cataleya, a six-month-old baby victim of sexual assault. Likewise, in northern Bogotá, the family of a 16-year-old youth mourns his death after participating in a boxing match organized inside his school in the locality of Suba.
Finally, authorities in Bogotá are investigating the death of teacher Kevin Santiago Ángel, who was found lifeless after being missing for several days and exhibiting strange behavior according to his family. In international news, a recent poll in the United States reveals that Donald Trump is losing the support of the white working class, as 54% of this group disapproves of his management, which could affect the upcoming legislative elections in that country.
