Autonomous cars in the Czech Republic: We need clear rules, says politician Jakub Stárek

Autonomous vehicles, i.e., cars controlled by a computer without the presence of a driver, are becoming a reality in many European countries. While neighboring Bavaria is already testing autonomous taxi services, the Czech Republic remains largely at the stage of theoretical plans and analyses. According to experts and politicians, it is high time for this technology to begin active development within the Czech context.

Jakub Stárek, a representative of the governing coalition, points out that the Czech Republic must not fall behind in the field of modern transport. Autonomous transport requires not only advanced technology but, above all, clearly defined rules. Without legislation that precisely determines how these cars should behave in traffic and who bears responsibility for potential accidents, it is impossible to begin safe testing in regular traffic.

The main challenge for Czech authorities now is to create an environment that will support innovation while simultaneously ensuring maximum safety for all road users. Experience from abroad shows that autonomous taxis can significantly help with traffic congestion in large cities and improve the accessibility of mobility for people who cannot drive their own cars.

However, the introduction of autonomous transport to Czech streets will not be a matter of a few months. It requires close cooperation between the state, technology companies, and transport experts. If a proper legal framework can be established, the Czech Republic could become one of the centers for the development of modern transport systems in Central Europe.
