Czech government plans to change public media funding

The Czech government is preparing a fundamental change to the funding system for public service media, such as Czech Television and Czech Radio. From January 2027, the current system of license fees is set to be abolished and replaced by direct funding from the state budget.

According to the government's proposal, this step is intended to ensure the stability of media outlets, which are crucial for informing citizens. Currently, households pay monthly fees for the operation of these institutions, as established by law. The change would mean that the money for their operation will become part of the annual state budget approved by parliament.

However, this intention is sparking a number of discussions. Experts and representatives of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) are expressing concerns about whether direct funding from the state budget might threaten media independence. There is a risk that the government could use the budget to influence broadcast content or exert political pressure on journalists.

The debate over this change will continue in the coming months. The government must convince the public and the professional community that the new system will sufficiently protect freedom of speech and independent journalism in the Czech Republic. The final form of the law will be the subject of further negotiations in the Chamber of Deputies.
