Czech Republic has disposed of millions of COVID-19 vaccine doses worth billions of crowns

Over the past few years, the Czech Republic has spent approximately 19 billion crowns on the purchase of vaccines against COVID-19. However, the majority of these supplies were not used, and the state had to have them disposed of. The primary reason was the expiration of the vaccines—the end of their shelf life—as well as a decline in public interest in vaccination in the recent period.

According to available information from the Ministry of Health, this involved millions of doses that were purchased as part of joint European procurement. These contracts were concluded during the pandemic, when the priority was to ensure enough vaccines for all citizens. At that time, it was unclear how the situation would develop and how many people would actually be interested in getting vaccinated.

However, with the gradual retreat of the pandemic and changes in virus variants, the situation shifted. Interest in vaccination dropped significantly, which led to a large quantity of purchased vaccines remaining in storage. The state attempted to donate a portion of the supplies to other countries or sell them, but due to a global surplus of vaccines, these options proved to be very limited.

The disposal of unused vaccines is now seen as an important issue for the state budget. Experts point out that the purchases were planned in a crisis mode, when uncertainty regarding the availability of medicine was very high. Now, however, there is a debate about how to prevent similar situations in the future and how to better manage public funds when purchasing medical supplies.

The entire matter raises questions regarding the efficiency of state procurement during crisis situations. The Ministry of Health is now analyzing how the contracts were structured and whether it is possible to negotiate more flexible terms in the future that would allow for a better response to the current needs of the population.
