Czech Republic plans construction of small modular reactors in Dětmarovice and Tušimice
The Czech Republic has taken another important step in the field of nuclear energy. The company ČEZ has announced that it has selected the Dětmarovice and Tušimice sites for the construction of new small modular reactors (SMRs). These areas, where coal-fired power plants were previously located, are an ideal choice for this type of modern technology.
The project will be implemented in cooperation with the British company Rolls-Royce SMR. This firm is among the world leaders in the development of small reactors, which are considered a safer and cheaper alternative to large nuclear units. The first reactor of this type is expected to be built in the United Kingdom, specifically at the Wylfa site in Wales.
The selection of Dětmarovice and Tušimice is not coincidental. Both sites already possess the necessary energy infrastructure, which is essential for connecting new reactors to the transmission grid. Furthermore, the use of existing industrial sites will help transform regions that have historically been dependent on coal combustion.
The introduction of small modular reactors is a key component of the Czech energy strategy. The goal is to ensure stable and emission-free electricity supplies at a time when the country is gradually moving away from the use of fossil fuels. If the pilot projects are successful, these reactors could become an important pillar of Czech energy in the coming decades.
