Beware of a dangerous pest: The Asian beetle threatens European forests

Czech nature conservation experts are warning against an invasive insect species that is spreading from Asia to Europe. It is the Asian longhorned beetle, which is capable of destroying healthy deciduous trees. This beetle poses a serious threat to both forestry and urban greenery, as it attacks trees such as maples, birches, and fruit trees.

The situation in neighboring Poland is already very serious. In recent months, Polish foresters have had to cut down thousands of infested trees to prevent the further spread of this pest. Experts fear that the beetle could easily reach the territory of the Czech Republic, primarily through international trade in wood or wooden packaging materials.

The Czech Nature Conservation Agency has therefore introduced stricter controls. Inspectors are focusing primarily on timber yards and areas near the borders. Early detection of the beetle's presence is also important. If people see suspicious insects in nature or their gardens, or damaged trees with holes in the bark, they should report this information to local authorities immediately.

So far, the presence of this dangerous pest has not been confirmed in the Czech Republic. However, experts emphasize that prevention is key in this case. The public should be cautious when importing wood from abroad and monitor the health of trees in their surroundings. Cooperation between citizens and state authorities is the best way to prevent the ecological damage that this "intruder" could cause.
