European Union plans major change in energy sector: The goal is a higher share of electricity

The European Commission has introduced a new ambitious plan that is set to fundamentally change the way the European Union produces and consumes energy. The main goal of this strategy is a significant increase in the share of electricity in total energy consumption, reaching up to 46 percent by 2040.

This step is of great importance for member states, including the Czech Republic. According to Brussels' estimates, a faster transition to electrification will lead to a significant reduction in dependence on imported fossil fuels from abroad. Specifically, natural gas imports could be reduced by more than 70 percent and oil imports by more than 40 percent.

For Czech industry and households, this means the necessity to adapt to new conditions. The electrification of transport, heating, and industrial production will require massive investments in the modernization of the energy grid and the development of renewable sources. The goal is to ensure greater energy security and stability for the entire union.

Experts agree that the path to this goal will be demanding but necessary to achieve climate commitments. In the coming years, further legislative steps can therefore be expected that will support and finance the electrification process in individual EU countries.
