A unique quantum computer is being built in Ostrava: The Czech Republic is moving to the technological forefront

An ambitious project has begun in Ostrava that aims to elevate Czech scientific technologies to a world-class level. Scientists here are working on the development of a quantum computer named VLQ. This machine utilizes entirely different principles than the common computers we use in our offices or homes today.

While a classic computer works with bits that function like a switch—meaning they are either on (1) or off (0)—a quantum computer uses so-called qubits. Thanks to the laws of quantum physics, qubits can exist in many states at once. This allows the computer to perform extremely complex calculations much faster than any current supercomputer.

Very specific conditions are necessary for this machine to function correctly. The quantum processor must operate in an environment of absolute cold to prevent calculation errors. Developers therefore had to build special cooling systems capable of maintaining a temperature near absolute zero, which is approximately minus 273 degrees Celsius.

The VLQ project is an important step for Czech research and innovation. If the development is successful, it will open the door to new discoveries in medicine, chemistry, and the development of new materials. Thanks to this effort, the Czech Republic is joining the ranks of countries that are actively shaping the future of computing technology.
