Czech energy sector is changing: Temelín switches to fuel from the USA

The Czech Republic is taking another important step toward energy independence from Russia. The Temelín nuclear power plant will begin using nuclear fuel from the American company Westinghouse in the near future. This process is part of a broader strategy aimed at ensuring safe and stable energy supplies for Czech households and industry.

State energy company ČEZ has already obtained all necessary permits for the introduction of the new fuel assemblies. The transition to Western technology is a technically demanding process that requires rigorous testing and approval by the State Office for Nuclear Safety. The goal is for the power plant to operate as safely and efficiently as it has until now.

The change of supplier is a direct response to the current geopolitical situation in Europe. Both the government and energy companies are striving to limit the influence of Russian supplies on Czech critical infrastructure. Diversifying sources, i.e., using multiple different suppliers, is key to ensuring the energy security of the entire country in the coming years.

In addition to Temelín, the Dukovany nuclear power plant is also preparing for a change of supplier. The entire process of gradually replacing Russian fuel should be completed within a few years. The Czech Republic is thus joining other European states that are modernizing their nuclear operations and strengthening their energy self-sufficiency.
