European Commission suspends subsidies for the Agrofert holding
The European Commission has decided to temporarily suspend the payment of subsidies to the agricultural and food holding company Agrofert. This measure is related to the ongoing resolution of issues concerning conflicts of interest involving the Czech political scene and the drawing of European funds.
The Czech Republic could not directly stop the payment process in this matter, as the final approval and control of European funds are decided by authorities in Brussels. The European Commission is currently verifying whether the subsidies were allocated in accordance with European Union rules, and has therefore decided to suspend payments for the time being.
The situation has sparked a broad discussion in the Czech Republic regarding transparency in the distribution of subsidies. Both the opposition and some experts have long pointed out that the connection between politics and large-scale business can lead to problems when drawing resources from the European budget.
Representatives of the Agrofert holding stated that they are cooperating with the authorities and believe that the whole matter will be explained soon. The company emphasizes that all its projects were implemented in accordance with the valid laws and rules that apply to subsidy applicants.
The European Commission will now continue to analyze all documents. Until the investigation is concluded, the payment of subsidies to this entity will remain suspended. The public will be informed about further developments after the audit is completed.
