Czechia, or The Czech Republic? Which name is correct?
Many people who are learning Czech or living in Czechia often ask one fundamental question: What is the correct English name for our country? Should we use the short name "Czechia," or the long official name "The Czech Republic"? This discussion has been ongoing for several years and still evokes emotions among the public and politicians.
The official political name of the state remains "The Czech Republic" (Česká republika). This name is used primarily in formal situations, in diplomacy, or on official state documents. It is similar to other countries that also have their own long names, such as "The French Republic" (Francouzská republika) or "The Federal Republic of Germany" (Spolková republika Německo).
Conversely, "Czechia" (Česko) is a short geographical name. In 2016, the Czech government officially approved this name as the correct short variant in English. Since then, this name has been appearing more and more frequently. Today, we can find it on maps, in international UN databases, and it is also used by large organizations such as the European Union or NATO. Czech athletes also increasingly have the inscription "Czechia" on their jerseys.
However, the use of the short name also has its critics. Some people think that the name "Czechia" does not sound good in English. Others fear that foreigners might confuse this name with Chechnya (Chechnya in English). On the other hand, proponents argue that the short name is much more practical for marketing, business, and everyday communication because it is easier to remember.
In conclusion, both names are correct and it primarily depends on the context. If you are writing a very formal letter or contract, it is better to choose "The Czech Republic." In everyday speech, in the media, or at sporting events, however, "Czechia" is a modern and internationally recognized choice that is gradually becoming the standard.
