Czech Republic faces criticism over export of surveillance technology to high-risk countries

The Czech Republic has come under scrutiny due to the export of sensitive technologies. According to information released by Pirate Party MEP Markéta Gregorová, Czech authorities issued more than a hundred licenses for the export of surveillance systems abroad in 2022 and 2023.

These technologies, which allow for the monitoring of digital communications or the movements of individuals, were sent to countries including Iraq and Pakistan. According to critics, these states are known for frequent human rights violations. There is, therefore, concern that Czech equipment could be misused to suppress freedom of speech or to track political opponents of the regimes.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade, which decides on the granting of export licenses, has not yet commented on the situation in detail. The approval process for the export of military and security material is subject to strict rules intended to ensure that the goods are not used for repression. Experts are now calling for stricter oversight and greater transparency in decisions regarding who the state sells these technologies to.

The entire case opens up a broader debate about the ethics of Czech foreign trade. While supporting exports is an important part of the Czech economy, the protection of human rights remains one of the priorities of Czech foreign policy. In the coming weeks, it is expected that the parliamentary committee on security will address the issue to determine whether there were any lapses in the granting of the licenses.
