Czechia watched a rare solar eclipse: How to capture celestial phenomena on a mobile phone
On Wednesday, August 12, Czechia experienced an exceptional astronomical phenomenon. Residents of our country had the opportunity to observe a partial solar eclipse, which was highly unusual in its intensity and progression. A similarly significant event will not occur in the Czech territory anytime soon, making it one of the main events of this summer for both astronomers and the general public.
Many people attempted to capture this rare moment using their smartphones. However, photographing the Sun presents specific challenges, as direct light can damage not only the observer's eyesight but also the camera lens or the phone's sensor. Experts therefore emphasize that it is necessary to use appropriate protective filters when shooting in extreme lighting conditions.
For high-quality images, experts recommend using manual exposure settings. The automatic mode on a phone often gets confused when looking at the bright Sun, resulting in an overexposed or blurry photograph. If users lower the exposure value directly in the camera app, they can capture much more detail of the eclipsed Sun in the image.
In addition to the right technique, patience and preparation are also key. Photographing celestial phenomena requires stability, so it is advisable to use a tripod or lean the phone against a firm surface. Even though modern technology allows for increasingly better photos, eye safety and equipment protection should always remain the top priority.
