Czech government plans changes to public media funding
The Czech government has announced a major plan regarding the funding of public media, such as Czech Television and Czech Radio. Starting in January 2027, the current system of license fees, which most households currently pay, is set to change.
According to the government proposal, these fees would be abolished. Instead, the media would be funded directly from the state budget. This move aims to simplify administration and respond to modern ways of consuming content, as people increasingly use the internet rather than traditional television receivers.
The plan has sparked a discussion in professional circles regarding media independence. Critics and some international organizations fear that a direct link to the state budget could threaten the freedom and independence of journalists from political power. Supporters of the change, on the other hand, argue that the current system is outdated and requires adjustment.
The debate over this change will continue in the Chamber of Deputies in the coming months. The government will have to convince the public and experts that the proposed system will provide the media with sufficient funding while maintaining their objectivity and independence, which is crucial for a democratic society.
