New technology on the Opava River: Smart weir to protect the village from floods

In the village of Brantice on the Opava River, a modern movable weir is currently under construction. This new structure will replace the original fixed weir, which no longer met current safety standards. The project is being implemented by the state-owned enterprise Povodí Odry with the aim of better protecting the surrounding landscape from water level fluctuations.

The main advantage of the new technology is the so-called inflatable system. It is a flexible structure that can automatically adapt to the current flow of the river. If the water level rises dangerously, for example during heavy rains, the weir will automatically deflate and collapse to the riverbed thanks to a smart mechanism. This clears the way for the flowing water and prevents it from spilling into the surrounding area.

This system is much more effective than old fixed weirs, which often acted as an obstacle during high flows and increased the risk of flooding. The modernization of watercourses is an important topic in the Czech Republic, as extreme weather has been occurring more frequently in recent years. Such technical solutions help to increase the safety of residents living near rivers.

The construction in Brantice is part of a broader strategy for managing Czech watercourses. In addition to flood protection, the new structure will also allow for better regulation of water in the river during drier months. The entire project is expected to be completed in the near future and will become an important element of the water management infrastructure in the Moravian-Silesian Region.
