Czech Army to clean up contaminated area in Šumava
The Army of the Czech Republic will undertake the remediation of a contaminated area in Šumava National Park. The site is located near the village of Zhůří in the Klatovy region, which was contaminated in the past. State representatives announced this decision following a joint meeting.
The site near Zhůří has posed a long-term problem for the environment in the protected area. The army is now tasked with ensuring the professional removal of harmful substances to prevent the further spread of pollution into the surrounding nature. The work will be carried out in close cooperation with the national park administration.
Involving the army in environmental projects of this type is not entirely common in the Czech Republic, but in this case, it was chosen as the most effective solution. The soldiers possess the necessary equipment and experience, which are essential for the challenging terrain of Šumava.
The remediation process is expected to take several months. The goal is the complete cleanup of the site and the subsequent restoration of its natural state so that the area once again meets the strict rules of the national park. Authorities will keep the public informed about the further progress of the work.
