New credit law raises concerns: Will loan sharks return to the Czech Republic?

The Ministry of Finance is preparing new legislation intended to regulate the rules for providing loans in the Czech Republic. The office's goal is to ensure that people with lower incomes or higher-risk clients continue to have access to legal loans. According to the ministry, it is important that these people do not end up in the hands of illegal providers.

However, experts in the field disagree with this intention. David Šmejkal, director of the Counseling Center for Financial Distress, warns that the proposed changes could have the opposite effect. According to him, relaxing the rules could lead to the return of loan sharks to the market, who offer loans under very disadvantageous and dangerous conditions.

The Czech Republic has already successfully fought against unfair practices in the loan sector in the past. Thanks to stricter regulation, it was possible to limit the influence of entities that exploited the financial distress of citizens. Experts now fear that the new law could devalue these achievements to date and open the door for the return of aggressive business practices.

The debate on the new form of the Consumer Credit Act will continue in the coming weeks. While the ministry argues for the availability of funds for all segments of the population, critics emphasize the need to protect consumers from over-indebtedness. The outcome of the legislative process will be key to the stability of the Czech financial market and the safety of households.
