Government U-turn: Czechia to pay for weapons for Ukraine
The Czech government has approved a fundamental change in aid to Ukraine and will begin financing the purchase of weapons. Meanwhile, at the NATO summit in Ankara, the Czech delegation is facing pressure for higher defense spending, while the army has taken delivery of a new transport aircraft. A court has also issued a final ruling on the extradition of a German extremist to her home country.
Czechia will now redirect funds to the international PURL program (a system for joint weapons procurement) for military aid to Ukraine. The government, composed of the ANO movement, SPD, and Motorists, had previously refused weapons deliveries but has now changed its stance. President Petr Pavel described the move as a positive shift at a time when NATO allies are demanding that Europe increase its own defense investments and not rely solely on US aid.
The negotiations in Ankara are accompanied by internal disagreements, which led Czechia to send two separate delegations led by President Pavel and Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. This lack of unity has also attracted the attention of foreign media. At the same time, Alliance partners are highlighting the need to meet defense spending commitments, which Czechia has long failed to fulfill.
As part of strengthening defense, the first of two ordered Embraer C-390 Millennium aircraft landed at Prague Airport on Monday. This Brazilian transport plane will significantly expand the capabilities of the Czech army, as it can handle not only cargo transport but also aerial refueling or firefighting.
In the legal sphere, a Czech court has definitively confirmed the extradition of German extremist Maja Liebichová to Germany. The decision ended a closely watched case that sparked a debate in the neighboring country about the abuse of laws and procedures against radical groups.
