The Czech Republic has invested record amounts in research, yet it still lags behind in European comparisons
Last year, the Czech Republic spent a total of 43.3 billion CZK on science, research, and development. This amount represents a significant investment in the future of the Czech economy and innovation. Although this is a high figure, the Czech Republic ranked 16th within the entire European Union.
While the total volume of funding is growing, experts point out that the share of these expenditures in the gross domestic product (GDP) remains lower compared to Europe's technological leaders. Countries such as Germany, Sweden, or Austria have long invested a much larger percentage of their economic resources into research.
Investments in research and development are crucial for the competitiveness of Czech companies in the global market. The state is striving to support, in particular, projects that connect the academic sphere with industrial production. The goal is for Czech products to have higher added value and not be dependent solely on cheap labor.
The future development of Czech science will depend on how effectively both the state budget and European funds can be utilized. The government plans to further increase support for innovation in the coming years so that the Czech Republic can move closer to the average of the most advanced countries in the European Union.
