Government changes the system of assistance for domestic violence victims

The Government of the Czech Republic is currently implementing major changes in the field of human rights. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš's cabinet has decided to reorganize the offices responsible for this agenda. According to government officials, the main goal of these changes is to streamline state administration, but critics are concerned about the impact on specific people in need.

One of the most debated steps is the abolition of a special network that helped victims of domestic violence. This network was created to make assistance faster and better coordinated. Thanks to it, various institutions, such as the police, social workers, and non-profit organizations, could cooperate more effectively and address cases comprehensively.

According to experts, there is now a risk that the system will return to so-called isolated decisions. This means that individual authorities will decide on cases on their own without broader context or mutual communication. In practice, for victims of domestic violence, this could mean longer wait times for help or more complex administrative processes in already difficult life situations.

Domestic violence remains a serious social problem in the Czech Republic, affecting thousands of people annually. Human rights experts point out that the state should instead strengthen and modernize the protection of victims. According to them, any changes in the organization of state administration should not jeopardize the safety and health of citizens who find themselves in danger.

On the contrary, the government claims that the reorganization is necessary for the better functioning of the state apparatus as a whole. However, it is not yet entirely clear exactly what the new structure will look like and whether it will be possible to maintain the high standard of assistance provided by the abolished network. The situation will continue to be monitored by non-profit organizations that have long been dedicated to helping victims.
