Czechia succeeds in international open data ranking, yet faces technological challenges
The Czech Republic has achieved significant success in the digitalization of public administration. In the current OURData index, regularly compiled by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Czechia placed in a very respectable sixth position. This index evaluates how effectively individual countries make their data accessible to the public and how they continue to work with it.
This strong placement confirms that domestic authorities are striving for greater transparency and openness toward citizens. Publishing data on the functioning of the state is key to the development of a modern economy, innovation, and better oversight of public spending. In this respect, Czechia ranks among the most successful countries in the world, having outperformed dozens of other nations.
Despite this success, however, experts point to persistent problems in daily practice. Authorities often struggle with so-called technological debt. This means that many systems are outdated and their modernization is proceeding slowly. Another issue is the low technical quality of some data, which complicates its further use for analytical purposes.
In conclusion, although sixth place in an international comparison is a great achievement, the journey toward a fully digital state is not yet over. For Czechia to maintain its position and ensure that data is truly useful, the state will need to invest in technological modernization and improve the quality of information management at all levels of public administration.
