Hundreds of thousands of EU citizens in the Czech Republic have the right to vote, but only some exercise it

There are currently more than two hundred thousand foreigners living in the Czech Republic who are citizens of European Union member states. Under current laws, these people have the right to participate in elections in the Czech Republic, specifically in municipal elections and elections to the European Parliament. They can not only vote for their representatives but, under certain conditions, can also be elected to municipal councils themselves.

Despite this legal right, the participation of EU citizens in Czech elections has long been a low-profile issue. Experts point out that the state does not pay much attention to these voters and information about voting options often does not reach them sufficiently. Many foreigners are thus completely unaware of their right to decide on local politics in their place of residence.

Administrative complexity is also a problem. In order for an EU citizen to participate in elections, they must in many cases actively register with the relevant authority at their place of permanent or temporary residence. For foreigners who are not fully integrated into the Czech administrative system, this process can be an obstacle that discourages them from participating in elections.

Improving awareness and simplifying access to the ballot box could lead to greater integration of foreigners into Czech society. If a larger portion of this group could be reached, these people could significantly influence the character of the cities and municipalities where they live, work, and pay taxes. The question of involving EU citizens in Czech political life thus remains a relevant topic for future discussions.
