Why the Czech Republic has not yet joined the European missile defense project

The Czech Republic has not yet joined the European Sky Shield initiative, which aims to create a joint air and missile defense system in Europe. This project, initiated by Germany, brings together more than twenty European countries. The goal is to better protect European airspace from threats such as ballistic missiles or drones.

According to experts and representatives of the Ministry of Defense, the main reason for the Czech non-participation is a different strategy. The Czech Army is currently focusing on modernizing its own air defense systems, such as the Israeli SPYDER complexes. The Czech Republic prefers bilateral cooperation with allies within NATO, which is more effective for Czech defense at this moment.

Experts also point out that the Sky Shield project is not directly part of North Atlantic Alliance structures but is an independent initiative. Some countries, such as France, have reservations about the project because they prefer European technologies over purchasing systems from the USA or Israel. The Czech Republic is therefore trying to carefully consider which equipment will be most suitable for its needs.

However, the Ministry of Defense emphasizes that the Czech Republic remains fully open to discussions about future cooperation. National security is a priority, and the government regularly evaluates whether involvement in similar international projects would bring concrete benefits to the Czech Army. At present, the Czech side is continuing with its own modernization plan, which was approved before the outbreak of current international debates.
