More than 390,000 unemployed people in Austria

In April, the number of unemployed people in Austria rose to about 392,600, a significant increase compared to 2024. This number includes job seekers and participants in training courses provided by AMS (Austrian Employment Office). The annual difference was about 24,300 people, equivalent to an increase of 8.4%.

Women recorded a significant increase in unemployment rates of 10.4%, while the increase among men was 6.9%. Youth unemployment was the most affected, rising by 10.9% at the end of April 2025. The number of job seekers immediately looking for vocational training opportunities registered with AMS increased by 19.4% (an increase of 1,199 people).

As for unemployment among foreigners, it has risen by 10.5%, while the increase among Austrian citizens was lower at 7.0%, according to the relevant ministry. Due to the continued increase in the number of job seekers over the months, the number of those classified as long-term unemployed has also risen, meaning those registered with AMS for a year or more, reaching about 91,200 people.

In light of the changes in labor market requirements, official bodies emphasize the need for urgent measures. They stress the importance of enhancing the skills of individuals with limited education to improve their chances of integrating into the labor market.

The Ministry of Labor pointed out that individuals with low educational qualifications are at a much greater risk of unemployment. For example, those with a vocational training certificate (Lehrabschluss) are 3.5 times less likely to face unemployment compared to those who only hold a compulsory education certificate.
